At Everlearn, we provide nutritious morning tea and afternoon tea each day, while families provide their child’s packed lunch. At first glance, this can seem like a simple operational choice, but there is a much deeper educational purpose behind it.
One of the most important goals of early childhood education is not simply preparing children academically for school. It is preparing them socially, emotionally and practically for the realities of school life.
For many children, the biggest challenges when starting school are not the academic aspects of school. The barriers that can most impact a child’s wellbeing and ability to learn are often actors such as:
These skills are not often talked about as “school readiness”, but they can significantly influence how secure and confident a child feels in their first year of school.
A child who is overwhelmed at lunchtime, unable to open their lunchbox, unsure where their food is, or anxious in the playground can quickly associate school with stress rather than confidence and curiosity. When children feel emotionally unsafe or unsettled, their capacity for learning is reduced.
By asking families to provide a packed lunch, we are intentionally creating opportunities for children to practise these real-world skills in a supportive environment with much lower educator-to-child ratios than they will experience at school.
At preschool, educators can gently guide children to:
Importantly, this happens gradually and with support.
Children learn routines through repetition. By the time they transition to kindergarten, many children who have practised these skills at preschool feel far more capable and confident navigating school lunch routines independently.
This approach also helps families better understand what foods their child will realistically eat during a busy school day. Many parents discover that foods eaten successfully at home are not always manageable in a school-style environment where children have limited time, distractions, noise and social pressures around them.
Our educators work closely with children during mealtimes to support positive eating habits, independence and social confidence. Combined with the healthy morning and afternoon tea options we provide, this creates a balanced approach that supports both nutrition and school readiness.
At Everlearn, we view school readiness as much more than academic preparation. Confidence, resilience, independence and emotional security are all critical foundations for future learning.
By helping children practise the everyday routines of school life in a safe, supportive preschool environment, we are helping set them up for a smoother, more successful transition to school and beyond.
